Our Minister

Mark Newton

Mark is a native of Florida: "The Sunshine State".  However, since his father was in the military during his early years, and due to the fact Mark is a former US Navy Submariner now a minister, he has had the opportunity of living in many different states including Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, Indiana, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Alaska, Virginia, Maryland, and now South Dakota.

Mark is a 1978 graduate of Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Bible in 1998 from Heritage Christian University in Florence, Alabama.  He received his Master of Science Degree in Christian Ministry in 2004 from Southern Christian University in Montgomery, Alabama.  Currently Mark is working on his Master of Divinity in Ministerial Leadership at Southern Christian University.

Prior to coming to the Madison Avenue Church of Christ in September of 2007, Mark has served at the following congregations:  the Shady Grove Church of Christ in Ethridge, Tennessee; the Tilden Church of Christ in Fulton, Mississippi; the Northern Lights Church of Christ in Fairbanks, Alaska (where he also served as a Police Chaplain); the Covington Church of Christ in Covington Virginia (where he also served as a member of the Covington Volunteer Rescue Squad and as a Hospice Chaplain); and the Annapolis Church of Christ in Arnold, Maryland.

Mark is involved in many things here in Pierre.  Besides preaching, he teaches adult Bible Classes, coordinates the educational program, and oversees the church's web site (development and maintenance).  In the community, Mark is also quite involved.  One of his primary areas of community outreach is his volunteer service as a chaplain for the Pierre Police Department.  He is also a member of the Central South Dakota Critical Incident Stress Management debriefing team, and serves on the Board of Directors for Capital Area Counseling.

Mark and his wife Jennifer have been married since 1984.  They have four beautiful children (2 boys - 22 & 18, and two girls - 24 & 12) and one beautiful granddaughter (4).
